Kämppäretki Nuuksioon / Cabin trip to Nuuksio 21.-23.10.

Siinä on kassalla ihmettelemistä, kun Hydepakin kirjava poppoo ostaa viikonlopun sapuskat kahdeksalletoista ihmiselle. Mutta loppulokakuun kylmien öiden uhatessa hiipiä tupaan ei auta säästellä sen enemmän rehujen kuin meetvurstinkaan kanssa.

Aurinko, tuo iso keltainen läiskä, oli jo hävinnyt taivaalta saapuessamme Kammin mökille Pirttimäen tienoilla. Pian oli rinkkaa makuupatjalla, tuvan käyttöohjeet syynäyksessä, takka varaamassa ja makkaratkin nuotiolla. Kansainvälisille ystävillemme kerrotut tarinat läheisestä Bodomjärvestä kylmäsivät sielua, mutta asia korjattiin välittömästi pienellä suomen kielen ääntämisharjoituksella laulun muodossa.

Lauantain valo toi mukanaan lisää retkeläisiä, ja uusiin ystäviin tutustumisen myötä oli aika lähteä vaeltelemaan. Syksyn väriloistosta päätellen reissun ajoitus taisi osua nappiin: Reitti 2000:n maisemat lampineen moikkasivat meitä sen verta muikeasti, että ainakaan otetuista luontokuvista ei puutetta jäänyt.

Ja mikä rentouttaisikaan enemmän lampsimisen jälkeen kuin itse tehdyt purilaiset ja sauna. Päivään ja iltaan mahtui myös koko liuta muita hydepakkimaisia tohinoita, ja moni matkalainen päätti ottaa näin hyvästä seurasta kaiken irti kömpien makuupusseihinsa vasta kun virkeimmät alkoivat jo heräillä.

Kämppäretken aina kruunaa kovin kotoisaksi muuttuneen tönön siivous yhdessä. Ja vaikka sunnuntai merkitsikin retken taakse jättämistä, sai moni matkalainen lohdutusmutusteltavaa yli jääneestä ruoasta, ja tällä kertaa se ei edes ollut hernekeittoa.

It's a real sight when Hydepakki's colourful gang buys a weekend's worth of groceries for eighteen people. But as the cold nights of late October threaten to creep into the cabin, one cannot afford any shortage of neither vegetables nor meetvursti.

The sun, that big yellow blob, had already vanished from the sky by the time we arrived to the cabin Kammi in Pirttimäki. Soon there were backbacks on sleeping mattresses, cabin instructions being analyzed, the fireplace gathering warmth and sausages cooking by the fire outside. The stories told to our international friends of lake Bodom nearby were chilling, but all fears were soon swept away by some Finnish pronunciation practice in the form of singing.

Saturday's light brought with it more campers, and after getting to know all the new friends it was time to go hiking. Judging by the bright colours of the autumn, the trip was timed just right: the sights of Route 2000 with all its ponds greeted us in a way that left no shortage of nature photos.

And what would be more relaxing after a good walk than self-made burgers and sauna. The day and evening involved a whole suite of other Hydepakkiesque activities, and many travellers decided to make the most of such good company by only retiring to their sleeping bags when the earliest birds were already starting to wake up.

The crowning moment of a cottage trip is always tidying up together the cabin that has curiously begun to feel like a second home. And even though the coming of Sunday meant leaving the trip behind, many travellers received therapy from all the leftover food they were handed, and this time it wasn't even pea soup.

Telttaretki Nuuksioon / Camping trip to Nuuksio 8.-9.10.2016

Oli valoisa ja varsin lupsakka aamu, kun nelisentoista hydepakkilaista paiskasivat kättä Espoon keskuksen bussipysäkillä telttareissun merkeissä. Joukkoon mahtui kaksijalkaisia vähän kaikilta mantereilta, ja osallistujien käsiin isketyt kauppakassit edustivat yhtä järjestömme kauneimmista perinteistä: Hydepakin tapahtumissa ei ruoka lopu kesken.

Lyhyen bussilla köröttelyn ja jaloilla köpöttelyn jälkeen saavuimme Urjan leirintäalueelle, jossa pian teltat kohosivat ja retkikeittimet lämpenivät. Täysin vatsoin oli hyvä lähteä kuljeksimaan: koettavana oli niin kansallispuiston syksinen järvimaisema kuin saksalaiset napostelukeksitkin. Ja saattoi mieltä lämmittää myös tieto telttapaikalla odottavasta riippumatosta.

Pohjoisen lokakuu paljasti kuitenkin kyntensä illan koittaessa, kun pimeys alkoi hiipiä metsään ja kylmä nipistellä nenänpäitä. Eräät kaappipyromaanit kuitenkin keksivät valjastaa nuotiopaikan urhean joukkomme käyttöön, ja niin vietimme illan leiritulen loimussa -- ja taisipa jollakulla olla kitarakin mukana.

Raittiissa ulkoilmassa nukkumisen jälkeen reippaimpien aamu alkoi puuron lisäksi järviuinnilla. Mutta lopuillekin oli selvää, että hauska ei lopu tähän: paluubussia odotellessa iskettiin nenää karttaan ja alkoi seuraavan retken suunnittelu.

It was a bright and rather calm morning when some fourteen Hydepakkeurs shook hands at a bus platform in Espoo for a camping trip. The group included bipeds from various continents, and the grocery bags they were handed represented one of our organizations most beautiful traditions: a Hydepakki event will never lack food.

After a bit of sitting and subsequent walking, we arrived at the Urja camping site where we soon raised our tents and warmed up our stoves. Our bellies full, we set out to explore: awaiting us were not only the autumn lakes of the national park but German cookies as well. And perhaps driving us on was also the memory of the hammock back at the camp.

But the northern October revealed its fangs with the coming of the evening, as the darkness began creeping into the forest and the cold began to tingle our nose tips. Some closeted pyromaniacs, however, managed to save the day by making good use of the fireplace, and so we spent the evening by the warm fire -- and someone might even have brought a guitar.

After a good night's sleep out in the fresh air, the hardiest of us began the new day not just with porridge, but with a refreshing swim in the lake. But everyone knew that the fun wouldn't stop here: while we waited for the bus home, we folded open our maps and began planning the next trip.

Seikkailua puiden latvoissa 27.7. / Adventure in the treetops on 27th July

Helteisenä aurinkoisena kesäiltana yhdeksän rohkean hydepakkilaisen porukka kokoontui Espoon Leppävaaraan kokeilemaan köysiratakiipeilyä. Saatuamme kypärät, valjaat ja tiukan turvallisuuskoulutuksen hajaannuimme puiden latvoihin koettelemaan omaa kestävyyskykyä ja korkeankammoa. Puiden väliset esteradat oli jaettu neljään vaikeusasteeseen, ja moni meistä uskaltui jopa vaikeimpaan, mustaan rataan, jonka esteet olivat parhaimmillaan 18 metrin korkeudessa! Ylhäältä puista avautuivat huikeat näkymät Leppävaaran urheilupuistoon ja lähellä oleviin peltoihin ja metsään. Ilta oli huikea, kiitos kaikille osallitujille!

On a hot sunny summer evening nine brave Hydepakki people gathered in Leppävaara, Espoo to try the treetop climbing. We got helmets, harnesses and a strict security training, and after that we spread to different routes to test our stamina and the fear of high places. The routes between the trees were divided into four different categories based on difficulty, and many of us had the courage to go to the most difficult black route, which was 18 meters high! The views that opened from the trees were magnificent, and altogether the evening was very nice. Thanks to all the participants!

Jukolan viesti - Jukola relay 18.-19.6.2016

Hydepakki osallistui perinteiseen tapaan Jukolan viestiin, joka kisattiin tänä vuonna 18.-19.6. Lappeenrannassa. Viime hetken muutoksista huolimatta saimme koko seitsenhenkisen joukkueen kasaan kuuden aikaan lauantai-iltana.Kisa käytiin tänä vuonna varsin märissä olosuhteissa - etenkin pellolle pystytetty kilpailukeskus oli lähinnä mutavelliä.

Joukkueen tavoite oli lähinnä maaliinpääsy, ja kaikki näyttikin hyvältä viimeisen osuuden lopulle asti. Ankkurin matkaan kuitenkin tuli hiukan liikaa mutkia viimeisillä rasteilla eikä maaliinpääsy ennen kolmea iltapäivällä aivan onnistunut.

Hyde and Teepakki participated again into traditional Jukola relay that was held this year in Lappeenranta on 18.-19.6. Despite of last minute changes we got full seven members into competition. Weather was this year very wet, especially competition centre was mostly mud.

Target for the team was mostly to get whole race completed, and everything seemed to be fine until third last control of last leg. But then our last leg runner got bit off the route, and couldn't reach finish line before 3 pm on Sunday afternoon.

Tour de Noux 21.-22.5

We had a great weeked trip in the blooming national park of Nuuksio. The weather was gorgeous: it was hot but there were no moskitoes.

 

In this picture a chemistry student in a makeshift lab is doing his magic: pancake dough.

The salmon was pierced by wooden bolts like a vampire.

We were 8 people, so there was room for spontaneus action: a tent sauna. 

All in all we had a great time. A big thank you for everybody!

Kakkukisa / Cake competition

Aurinkoisen kevät päivänä joukko innokkaita leipureita kokoontui Helsinkiin leipomaan ja herkuttelemaan.

On a sunny day a group of bakers came together in Helsinki to bake, eat and hang out.

Porukka jakaantui kolmeen ja alkoi tiukka huutokauppa aineksista. Jokaiselle ryhmälle tarjottiin perusainekset kakkua varten, mutta saaduilla pokeripoleteilla tuli ostaa kakkuun täytteet ja pääliset.

The group was divided to three and the auction started. Every group got basic ingredients for the cake, but with given poker chips the teams bought something inside and to he top of the cake.

Nettiä ja keittokirjaa apuna käyttäen taikinat tehtiin ja paistettiin samalla tutkaillen muiden teoksia. Lopuksi kakut täytettiin ja koristeltiin.

With the help of Internet and cook book every team came up with a plan and started baking while looking at each others creations. After cooking the cakes they were filled and made look as good as possible.

Yhden kakun vielä ollessa uunissa aloitettiin kahden ensimmäisen maisteleminen ja vertailu. Lopputulokset olivat herkullisia ja viimeinenkin kakku syötiin kokonaan, kun todettiin, ettei sitä jakseta paistaa enempää.

One cake was still in the oven when the tasting and evaluating of the first two cakes begun. The end results were delicious and the last cake was eaten even though it wasn't cooked through.

Illan jälkeen kaikilla oli vatsat täynnä kakkua ja jäljelle jäi vain yksi pala.

After the cooking  everyone had their stomachs full of cake and only one peace was left.

Vappu 2016

Hydepakin vapputouhuja riitti viimevuotiseen tapaan kahdelle päivälle: sekä vappuaattona että itse vappupäivänä suunnattiin Kaivopuistoon ihmettelemään sääjumalten suosiota.

Vappuaattona nautittiin kevään tulosta pelien parissa. Armottoman mölkynpeluun ja frisbeenheittelyn lomassa ehdittiin höpöttää niin Coloradon väestönkehityksestä kuin korianterintykkäysgeeneistäkin. Päivän ohjelma päättyi huikeaan maailmanvalloitusleikkiin, joka sai yllättävän geopoliittisia piirteitä osanottajien hiekkaimperumien yrittäessä nitistää toisensa.

Itse vappupäivänä osallistuimme porukalla Kaivopuiston perinteiseen vappupiknikkiin. Akrobaattisemmat hydepakkilaiset järjestivät Hyden lipun liehumaan ylväästi tammenoksaan samalla kun herkkusuisemmat hydepakkilaiset kaivoivat trangiat esiin munkinpaisto-operaatiota varten. Ei ole trangiassa itse paistetun donitsin voittanutta -- onneksi tehtiin niitä melkein sangollinen.

Just like last year, Hydepakki just couldn't get enough of vappu, so we headed to Kaivopuisto twice to witness the favour of the weather gods.

The day before Vappu we spent playing games. Our bigger-than-life games included mölkky and frisbees, and our conversations ranged from the demographic development of Colorado to coriander genetics. We ended the day by playing a game of "world domination" which turned surprisingly geopolitical as the various empires of sand attempted to crush one another.

On the 1st of May we took part in the traditional vappu picnic in Kaivopuisto. Our more acrobatic members set Hyde's flag flying majestically on an oak branch as our more food-oriented members set up trangias for a formidable donut operation. There's no donut like one self-made in a trangia -- good thing we made almost a bucketful of them.

Päiväretki Sipoonkorpeen 13.3. / Day trip to Sipoonkorpi on March 13th

Kauniina aurinkoisena kevätaamuna suuntasimme noin kymmenen hengen porukalla kohti Sipoonkorven kansallispuistoa. Parempaa ilmaa ei olisi voinut toivoa - aurinko paistoi ja lämmitti, linnut lauloivat ja hymy oli herkässä. Lähdimme kiertämään Kalkkiruukin luontopolkua, minkä jälkeen jatkoimme matkaa puiston itäosaan Bakunkärriin. Pientä sekaannusta tuli, kun jouduimme lähettämään retkikunta eksynyttä myöhästynyttä retkeläistä vastaan, mutta siitäkin selvittiin. Matkalla metsän läpi itään päätimme poiketa polulta suunnistamaan, ja vaikka emme varsinaisesti eksynneet, oli vaikeassa maastossa rämpiminen aikamoinen seikkailu! Retken päätteeksi pidimme evästauon ja grillailimme Kalkkiruukin laavulla. Kiitos kaikille retkelle osallistuineille mukavasta retkestä ja hyvästä seurasta!

The day was very beautiful and sunny - we couldn't have hoped for better weather! Our trip started on a nature trail of Kalkkiruukki in the southern part of the park, from where we followed a path leading us to the east. At some point of our journey we decided to go deviate from the path and do some orienteering, which turned out to be a real adventure with all the unexpected wet swamps and disappearing trails! Finally we returned to a bonfire place on the nature trail, where we spent a while grilling sausages and relaxing. It was a very nice day, thanks to everyone who came to the trip!

New Year's trip to Ylläs 26.12.2015-3.1.2016

The New Year's trip to Ylläs has been a tradition of Hydepakki for many years. This year there were eight of us, including four foreign students. First we travelled to Kolari with a night train and then continued the last 40 kilometers with a bus, except Petri, who always prefers cycling. We stayed seven nights in a cabin in Äkäslompolo and during the days we had the option to do cross-country and downhill skiing, cycling, snowshoeing, listening to the traditional New Year's speech of the president of Finland, cooking and eating (a lot) or just relaxing and exploring the town. Äkäslompolo has only around 500 permanent residents, but together with another nearby small town, Ylläsjärvi, they form the second most popular ski resort in Finland. The place is more commonly known as Ylläs, which is the name of the 718 metres high fell between the towns.

Some highlights from the trip were skiing and having a break in nice cafés next to the skiing track, walking on the frozen river and over the fells with snow shoes or even with a bicycle (fatbike), encounters with wild reindeer, the amazing views from the fell and the building of a Chinese snowman and a many meters tall snow castle (Afrizal and Petri spent more than ten hours over three nights to do it). There was plenty of snow and the temperature varied from zero to nearly -30 degrees celcius, but of course there was also possibility to warm up in the sauna.

As always, Ylläs did not disappoint those who enjoy snow activities!

Oranki Bouldering Cave 15.2.16

Hydepakki had a trip to the Oranki bouldering cave in Otaniemi yesterday. The cave consists of an old room, about 20 square meters, converted into a cave with over 40 problems. Members of Oranki Climbing Club (AYY) were present to offer advice and demonstrate how to address different bouldering problems. It was a good environment for beginners; being able to watch how experienced climbers go about bouldering is as helpful as attempting problems yourself. I have the tendency to over exert myself and attempt too many problems in a short period of time. Petri and other Oranki members are more methodical and controlled in their body movement and how they plan their routes. It was a fun hour and a half and we look forward to future climbing events with other Hydepakki members. I will definitely visit Oranki again because of a few unfinished problems I need to finish, but we also learned about a variety of other indoor caves and outdoor bouldering spots to explore in the future!
